Climate change
Local authorities are at the forefront of
addressing climate change at a local level and Knowsley Council is
taking this responsibility seriously because it can help save
money, promote community well being and protect our natural
environment.
What are we doing?
We have:
- Signed up to the Nottingham
Declaration on climate change - a national initiative to reduce
the council’s contribution to climate change.
- Developed a Carbon Management Plan to reduce emissions from our
buildings and services and reduce costs from energy and fuel
use.
- Produced a Greenhouse
Gas report (PDF, 260KB) outlining the councils emissions in
2010/11. This will be updated annually at the end of July as
requested by the Governments Department of Energy and Climate
Change.
- Devised a renewable energy action plan aimed at developing
local and renewable forms of energy generation, ranging from
biomass to solar.
Our pilot community project the ‘Green Neighbour Challenge’ was
launched at the end of January in Bowring (Huyton) to help
residents in the area lower their carbon emissions and save money.
If you live in this area and are interested in taking part,
please contact us on 0151 443 2480.
Knowsley's Local Strategic Partnership – including key partners
ranging from the police and fire service to housing trusts and the
NHS - also recognises the importance of taking action and is
currently developing a climate change strategy and action plan for
the borough. This will include actions to reduce carbon
emissions and adapt to the future effects of climate change such as
increased risk of flooding and heat waves.
How you can make a change

You have the power to control climate change!
Why not have a go yourself at making decisions about energy
production and use and see how this affects carbon emissions?
A new government website called My2050
gives users control over how we produce energy - offering
everything from wind turbines and solar panels to biomass and
hydropower alongside traditional forms of power production.
Will you put a solar panel on every roof? Will you change the
way we fuel our vehicles? Can you keep the lights on, but still
meet demanding CO2 targets? You can help decide how our nation
looks in the future.
You will also be able to view other people’s eco solutions and
share your own via Facebook or Twitter (follow @knowsleycouncil to
share your views with us).
The web-site has been launched by the Government in line with
its recently published Carbon Plan. The UK has set
legal targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 and the 2050
pathways analysis is designed to create a clear road to a low
carbon Britain.
