The council does not provide a skip hire service but residents should be aware that skip hire companies should follow regulations and have the necessary skip hire permit in place before letting them for hire.

Please note that it is not the person hiring the skip that should apply for the permit, but the skip hire company.  You will find local skip hire companies on the internet, Yellow Pages or in your local newspaper.

How to apply

Complete the skip permit application form and we will confirm if your application has been approved in three working days. You should not supply skips without approval from the highway authority.

How long does a permit last?

Between one and 14 days. Skip owners must make an additional application for longer periods. Only one skip will be allowed on site at any one time unless your circumstances are exceptional.

Where should skips be placed?

Skips should be placed as close as possible to the edge of a carriageway. They must not obstruct the surface water drainage, or driveways, road junctions, fire points or any manhole covers (water, main drainage, gas, electric etc). Skip owners should also make sure they do not cause an obstruction to other road users.

Other requirements

Skip suppliers are responsible for ensuring that all regulations are adhered to. You can download a copy of the skip conditions and regulations (Word 140KB).

  • Skips placed on the carriageway require at least four traffic cones on the approach side to guide traffic past the skip.
  • During the hours of darkness and bad weather conditions you must place road danger lamps agains or attached to each corner of the skip. If on the carriageway, a lamp should be placed between each cone. If the council's contractors are called out to lamp a skip or make it safe, a charge will follow.
  • Skips must be covered to avoid dust or spillage on the highway. Skips must not be overloaded.
  • Skips placed on the highway must not contain any inflammable or explosive material or anything which is likely to cause a nuisance to highway users.
