Hate crime

Hate crime is any offence or incident committed against a person or property that is motivated by an offender’s hatred of someone because of their:

  • Race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins
  • Religion
  • Gender or gender identify
  • Sexual orientation
  • Disability
  • Age

How to report hate crime

If you have been or know someone who has been a victim of hate crime, call the Hate Incident and Domestic Violence Hotline on 0800 953 4433.

The Safer Knowsley Partnership also supports Stop Hate UK, a voluntary independent charity who provide a help and reporting line on 0800 138 1625.

Merseyside Police has Hate Crime Investigation Units called SIGMA in each area.  Dedicated officers investigate reports of hate crime.  You can contact the unit on 0151 709 6010.

The Safer Knowsley Partnership recognises that not all of those affected by hate may wish to pursue a criminal justice response and as a result Knowsley Council monitors reports of hate and ensures that an appropriate response is available based on the needs of the individual.
