Alleygating

The gating of alleyways is a useful tool for the reduction and
prevention of burglary and criminal damage, and for reducing
anti-social behaviour such as graffitti, fly-tipping and abandoned
vehicles.
Can I request that alleygates be erected in my area?
Yes. This will then lead to a number of actions which will
include asking the police for the last six months of crime and
anti-social behaviour statistics.
Gating legislation requires that gates should only be erected if
there is evidence that they are needed, but we also try to gather
as much community intelligence to support the gating.
What else is involved?
There needs to be a reasonable alternative route to get from
where the closure begins to where it ends so we must consult
with residents who will be affected by the proposed closure.
We must also do the following:
- Consult with the police, fire and ambulance services.
- Carry out land registry and utility checks.
- Seek planning permission if necessary.
Once this has been approved we advertise a gating order in the
local and national press and post a notice in the vicinity of each
end of the proposed closure. This allows for a 28 day period
for those who may not have been involved in the original
consultation a chance to object.
If no objection is made, the gates will be erected. If we
do receive objections which cannot be resolved, this must then go
to an Appeals Committee. The decision of the committee is
final.
