Buildings and structures can be listed if they are considered to have special character, architectural or historic merit are nationally important and worthy of preservation. The older a building is the more likely it is to be listed.

There are 121 listed buildings in Knowsley. 1 Grade I, 4 Grade II Star, the remaining 116 are Grade II. English Heritage is responsible for listing buildings of national importance. Further details can be found on the English heritage web site.

Categories of listed buildings:

  • Grade I buildings are of exceptional interest, sometimes considered to be internationally important.
  • Grade II Star buildings are particularly important buildings of more than special interest.
  • Grade II buildings are nationally important and of special interest.
