Registered memorial masons

The erection of memorials is permitted on graves where the exclusive right of burial has been granted.  All memorials must be constructed and erected by a registered memorial mason.

Only memorial masons on the following list are currently registered to carry out works in Knowsley Council's cemeteries. No memorial mason can work in the cemeteries without registering. Any unauthorised memorials, or work on a memorial, carried out by a mason not on this list will result in that headstone being removed.

Erecting a memorial

Permission from the council to erect the memorial is required before the memorial is erected. The cemetery has regulations governing the size and construction details of memorials.  Registered memorial masons are aware of these. A fee is charged for the erection of a memorial, payable by the memorial mason - please check that this is included in the price you are quoted.

If you have purchased the Right of Burial within the cemetery then you can apply to erect a headstone upon the grave. An application for permission must be made to the council by the Memorial Mason, together with details of inscriptions. The inscriptions have to be approved to ensure decency.

 

Maintaining memorials

The cemeteries are designated as lawn cemeteries and as such no kerbs or surrounds are allowed. The cultivation of the grave space for the purposes of planting shrubs or plants is also not permitted. The maintenance of all memorials remains the responsibility of the grave owner and insurance cover for the memorial is advised.

We request that any change of address of the grave owner is notified to the Bereavement Services office as soon as possible.

Memorials remain on graves entirely at the owner’s risk and the council cannot accept responsibility for damage however caused. The owner is responsible for keeping them in repair and good order, and should ensure the memorial is adequately insured. Details of insurance can be obtained from your Memorial Mason.

The council reserves the right to remove unauthorised memorials or those memorials which in its opinion have become unsafe, and to prune or dig up any plants or shrubs that have become overgrown or unsightly.
