Memorials
There are a number of memorial options at the Wall of
Remembrance and Garden of remembrance.
Our staff can help you decide on the type of memorial you
require. Memorials can be leased in 10 year periods, with the
option to renew. There is no further charge for maintenenance or
upkeep during that period of dedication.
Memorial safety
To ensure the safety of visitors and staff in the cemeteries,
the council carry out a safety audit of all memorials. The
council is obliged to make safe any memorial posing a danger and
will then attempt to make contact with the owner.
Memorials remain the property and responsibility of the
registered grave owner and owners are required to check their
memorial is safe. Should you find your memorial to be unsafe,
you should arrange to have repair work carried out by a monumental
mason.
Insurance and responsibility for headstones
You should seek appropriate insurance cover as repairs can be
expensive. A number of monumental masons provide this service
and some will offer a guarantee of their workmanship.
The council is not responsible for any damage to memorials and
reserves the right to remove any memorial that has become unsightly
or unsafe.
The Memorial Mason Registration Scheme
The Memorial
Mason Registration Scheme (PDF) aims to establish a
uniform standard of workmanship and working practices throughout
all of the council’s cemeteries and graveyards.
