Knowsley to undertake council tax review
Knowsley Council is starting a review of Council Tax discounts
next month.
The review is taking place to ensure that any relief granted, such
as the 25% Single Person Discount, is only awarded when there is a
valid entitlement.
Cllr Norman Keats, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Finance
& IT, said: “The Council has a legal and social
responsibility to ensure it collects all the Council Tax due in
order that everyone in Knowsley gets value for money.
“Any discount given to residents reduces the revenue we are
able to collect, therefore we need to ensure that only those people
who are due a discount are awarded one.”
There are currently 24,159 residents claiming the single person
discount in Knowsley. Rather than contacting every resident
claiming the discount directly, the Council is now undertaking a
residency check which will enable it to most efficiently target
those residents whose circumstances differ from those recorded on
its systems and who may no longer be eligible for a discount.
Knowsley is using an external agency, which has carried out this
work for other local authorities to carry out the checks using a
number of databases.
As part of the review, residents will also be contacted and given
information on the various benefits they may be entitled to claim.
This will include details of the type of benefit available, an
indication of eligibility criteria and contact details for
residents who need to speak to an advisor at Knowsley.
If you live in Knowsley and would like to speak to an advisor about
your entitlement to a Council Tax discount, please call 0151 443
