Top marks for Kirkby school

Simonswood celebrate top Ofsted marks

A Kirkby primary school has been given top marks by Government inspectors.

A report described Simonswood primary as an “outstanding” school that lives up to its motto, “To achieve all that is possible and believe in oneself”.

The report by Ofsted, the Government’s education inspection body, praises the quality of teaching at the school in Westhead Avenue.

Pupils reach the national average in English, Maths and science, by the end of their time at the school, despite often beginning from a much lower point.

It said “teachers are very good at capturing and holding pupils’ interest”, adding, “classrooms buzz with excitement and industry”.

The curriculum is described as “outstanding” as is the special needs co-coordinator, who gives “expert guidance” to support staff who are in turn praised for their work with pupils with special needs.

The inspectors describe head teacher Phil Newton as inspirational and say the care, guidance and support staff give to pupils is outstanding.

Parents say their children “run into school and come out smiling” and they also praise the Play and Stay sessions that develop parents’ ability to interact with their children.

The behaviour of the pupils is praised by the inspectors and the children are quoted as valuing the help of the school’s learning mentor who helps them “when we are sad or upset.”

The clean bill of health is also boosted by the inspectors’ confidence in the school’s constant efforts to improve.

The report adds: “Although this is a first class school, there is no resting on laurels here; the staff are neither complacent nor content to stand still.”

Head teacher Phil Newton said: “This is a tribute to the outstanding work and effort of all the staff and pupils here.

“It confirms what we all feel about our marvelous school and it’s great to get such praise for what we do, day in, day out.”
