Active Knowsley Challenge results
Over 1500 people put on their trainers and cycle helmets on
Sunday 18th May to take part in the 2008 Active Knowsley Challenge
in the beautiful surrounds of Knowsley Hall.
The event staged by Knowsley Council and Knowsley NHS Primary Care
Trust saw runners, walkers and cyclists of all ages taking part in
a variety of challenges.
100 walkers started the day at a leisurely pace as they took part
in a 3k guided walk around the estate.
The Junior Active Challenge followed with 117 runners aged between
8 and 16 taking part. Prizes were awarded to the fastest male and
female finishers; Joseph Shepherd aged 12 a pupil at All Saints
High School Kirkby and Hannah Dowell aged 13, a Pupil of West Kirby
Grammar School, who finished the course in 9 minutes 14 seconds and
12 Minutes 25 Seconds. Winners in each of the three age categories
were also awarded a prize.
It was then the turn of the 500 runners taking part in the 5k race
who were set on their way by the Mayor of Knowsley, Councillor
Michael Foulkes. The ‘Brooky Fliers’ team from
Brookfield School in Kirkby were celebrating after claiming both
the fastest finishing male and female titles, with Pavric Harvey
and Christine Murphy finishing at an impressive 17 Minutes 1 Second
and 19 minutes 37 seconds respectively. They also clinched the
overall winning team title with a combined completion time of 1Hour
15 minutes and 8 seconds.
A 3k Guided Cycle ride rounded off the day’s events leaving
participants free to wander round the information stands offering
health checks, details of leisure facilities and other health and
wellbeing information.
Rosemary Hawley MBE, Chair of Knowsley NHS Primary Care Trust
said,
“The turnout at this year’s Active Knowsley Challenge
was incredible and I was thrilled to see so many enthusiastic
runners and riders of all ages and abilities getting taking the
opportunity to get active and have fun.”
Councilor Eddie Connor said,
“Getting more people involved in sports and physical activity
is a key priority for Knowsley and the Active Knowsley Challenge
demonstrates how we are doing that in partnership, in this case
with the Council and PCT working together. We know that people like
to participate in a lot of different ways which is why it’s
been so good that, as well as people taking part in the traditional
5k run, lots of people of all ages also took part in the junior
race, the cycle race and the 3k guided walk.”
Everyone who took part in the four events received a medal to
recognise their participation and the junior runners all also
received goody bags kindly donated by the Asda store in
Huyton.
