Knowsley helps the environment

Knowsley is helping the environment with biodegradable carrier bags.
The new carrier bags are made from biodegradable plastic which
disintegrates within approximately 12 months in landfill, and
naturally starts to degrade within 2 years 'on the shelf'.
Councillor Morgan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic
Development said: "The new biodegradable carrier bags are
just one way that Knowsley is reducing the amount of waste in the
borough.
"We want to encourage people to make a difference and ensure
that Knowsley is a clean and green place for people to live."
The carrier bags are far stronger than other bags and can be
re-used by market customers.
This initiative supports Knowsley's commitment to environmental
sustainability. Other initiatives include:
- A new co-mingled recycling service launched 2 June enabling residents to recycle paper, cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and cardboard in a new grey wheeled bin.
- 5 multi material and 5 green waste recycling teams deliver a service to 63,000 households.
- Knowsley residents recycled 11,704 tonnes of waste in 2007/2008 which is a 16% increase on the year before.
