National Tackling Drugs Week
The Safer Knowsley Partnership is committed to reducing the
availability and harm that drugs cause in local communities. The
Partnership’s approach combines information, enforcement,
education and treatment.
As part of this commitment, the Safer Knowsley Partnership was out
in force last week to support National Drugs Week. Throughout the
week (19-23 May 2008):-
- Roadshows took place in Kirkby, Huyton and Prescot Town Centres with staff from the Local Authority and Lighthouse Project. The roadshows were held in key locations for members of local community to come along and find out what help and support is available in Knowsley.
- The Youth Offending Service also launched their “Green Matters” information booklet for young people on the perils of cannabis usage.
- A programme of activity took place across the borough’s schools, educating youngsters on the dangers of drugs for themselves, their families and the wider community and also the help and support available.
- A football tournament was arranged with service users and providers.
- Throughout the week, 2 cannabis farms were recovered in Huyton, resulting in the seizure of 54 cannabis plants.
- Five Warrants under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 were executed across the Borough, resulting in 27 arrests for a variety of offences including possession of a controlled drug and possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.
- Drugs education information about drug possession/use and the law and the health consequences, were available in a variety of high profile locations across the borough, including one-stop shops, libraries, youth centres and community centres.
- Drug enforcement and harm reduction messages were communicated via Bluetooth mobile phone technology.
Steve Agger, Assistant Chief Executive for Crime and Disorder for Knowsley, commented “The Safer Knowsley Partnership is working effectively to tackle drugs and reduce drug-related crime in Knowsley.”
