Recycling gets competitive
Knowsley Council is organising two great competitions to
encourage all school children to help improve recycling in the
area.
Pupils are being asked to design a poster that captures the
importance of recycling within the community, which will then be
used as part of a future recycling publicity campaign.
The second, “Paper Weight” competition will challenge
each school to recycle the highest volume of paper, with the
opportunity to win £500 each month.
The student responsible for the winning poster design will receive
a new bike as a prize and will spend time with a designer turning
their concept into reality.
The winning pupil’s school will also receive a themed
theatre production on recycling, which could be used as a part of
an assembly.
As part of the “Paper Weight” competition, the council
will provide all participating schools with new 240 litre bins to
store their recycled paper and will monitor performance on a weekly
basis by providing a dedicated weekly collection service.
To make sure the competition is fair, performance will be measured
by total weight of paper collected, divided by the total number of
pupils. This will provide a recycled weight per pupil.
Cllr David Lonergan, Knowsley’s Cabinet member for
Neighbourhood Delivery said: “Recycling is a top priority in
Knowsley and these competitions will get the message across to our
younger residents just what a difference we can all make.
“As a Council we are determined to increase the amount of
waste that we recycle and this initiative will both raise awareness
and enable schools to recycle even more with the minimum amount of
inconvenience”
