Blueprint on the future of Kirkby unveiled

Knowsley Council has received plans to develop Kirkby from Tesco Stores Ltd.

This marks a significant milestone in developing the future of Kirkby. The views of residents, businesses and anyone else with an interest in the town are now being encouraged before the application is considered by the council’s planning committee.

Tesco have applied for a new mixed use development including a new football stadium for Everton Football Club with capacity for just over 50,000 seats, retailing (including a 22,485sqm superstore), food and drink uses, hotel, offices, commercial and community uses, petrol filling station,, more than 3,500 car parking spaces, bus and coach parks, residential development together with new accesses, infrastructure and landscaping.

The plans are available to view at Kirkby One Stop Shop, Huyton One Stop Shop and on the council’s web site. Council officers will also be hosting a two-day community drop-in event at the Kirkby One Stop Shop meeting room sometime in January.

Officers will also be taking the plans to neighbourhood, community and business meetings as soon as possible. A further announcement on specific dates and a full programme of proposed consultation events will be made soon.

Findings from the consultation will be presented to the Council’s planning committee in late Spring 2008 if no significant issues are raised. If significant issues are raised the plans will be amended and consulted on further.

Kirkby councillor Eddie Connor, Cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Communities said: “As with any planning application this must represent the best possible deal for the residents of Kirkby and the long-term future of the town.

“I urge all residents and anyone with an interest in Kirkby to view the plans, come along to the drop-in event and to comment on the plans. This is their chance to have a say on the future of their town.

“The application offers the chance to significantly develop the town centre. The council wants to hear the views of residents, businesses and all those with an interest in Kirkby’s future development as part of an open consultation process.”
