Alan Stubbs among first to try Kirkby's new leisure centre

Alan Stubbs visits Kirkby Leisure Centre

Everton legend and famous son of Kirkby, Alan Stubbs, was yesterday one of the first visitors to try out the new Knowsley Council owned Kirkby Leisure Centre on Cherryfield Drive, Kirkby.

The state of the art £12m centre, which includes a large swimming pool, a learner pool, sports hall, fitness gym and two multi-purpose halls, replaces the old centre on Valley Road.

Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley Council’s cabinet member for Leisure, Community and Culture, said: "As a local authority, Knowsley is committed to improving people's lives by providing excellent facilities to encourage everyone to enjoy sport and physical activity, which is vitally important for good health and fitness.

“This new centre is a really fabulous addition to the area and we hope everyone will come along and make good use of it for many years to come.”

The new Kirkby leisure centre has a bigger gym than its predecessor, complete with top of the range Vivo Customer Management system, which enables users to design their own tailor made workout programme.

There are also 14 additional classes on offer, with everything from bodypump and kickfit to yoga and Tai Chi. The new centre is also open for longer – from 6.30am each weekday for anyone wanting to take advantage of an early morning workout.

Main contractor on the site was Shepherd Construction.

The leisure centre is now open for groups and individuals to use ahead of a gala opening in November.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the facilities at the centre, prices for memberships or details of the different classes and groups that use it can visit the Kirkby Leisure Centre page or call the centre on 0151 443 4404.
