Flash bang wallop!

From the earliest times, people have made a record of what they have seen, from simplistic cave paintings, through the work of the great artists to photography and film making.

Prescot Museum’s latest exhibition ‘Flash, Bang, Wallop!’ tells the story of photography. Starting with the its early beginnings in the 16th century with the camera obscura, experimental image making in the early 19th century, right through to the digital processes of our century. The exhibition will include many interesting objects including cameras, accessories, ephemera and local photographs.

Find out where the term ‘watch the birdie’ comes from, discover how light travels and what makes it bend, and experiment with lenses and prisms.

Alongside the exhibition there will be a display of photographs from the museum’s archived collection showing life as it was in Prescot.

There will also be a children’s summer holiday photography competition, with a selection of photographs on display in the Museum. Further details and an entry form are available from Prescot Museum.

Various informal learning activities aimed at families will be available along with themed events during school holidays. The museum is hoping to engage school children with curriculum based workshops, exploring the properties of light and reflection with mirrors and lenses.

The exhibition will run from 18th September to 6th January 2008 and admission is free.

Prescot Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 1pm and 2-5pm and also on Sundays 2-5pm. For more information contact the museum on 0151 430 7787 or email prescot.museum@knowsley.gov.uk.
