Crackdown on illegal vodka

Drinkers in Knowsley are being warned cheap booze could be lethal – after counterfeit vodka was found on sale in the borough.

Knowsley Environmental Health and Consumer Protection Service in partnership with HM Customs have seized a substantial quantity of counterfeit and non duty paid tobacco and cigarettes were seized as well as a consignment of counterfeit vodka.

Residents are being warned that this vodka could contain dangerously high levels of methanol and can have serious effects on their health.

Cllr Ken Keith Cabinet member for Corporate Resources said: “This is yet another example of the excellent partnership working that exists between Knowsley Council and the other law enforcement agencies which helps to ensure the safety of the residents of Knowsley.

“These operations will continue as Knowley’s Environmental Health and Consumer Protection Service aim to prevent these unsafe and illegal products being available for sale in the borough.”

Residents with any information relating to counterfeit or illegally imported goods are urged to contact Knowsley’s Environmental Health and Consumer Service on 443 4723. All information will be treated as confidential.
