Prize blooms on show

Flower power is back this summer in Knowsley, in the biggest, free horticultural show in the North West.

The Knowsley Flower Show takes place on Sunday, August 5 at Court Hey Park and is expected to attract thousands of visitors.

This year the event will be ‘greening up’, with lots of eco friendly fun and activities for all the family.

Show categories include everything from pot plants to cut flowers to vegetables and floral art with impressive prize money for both experienced gardeners and novices.

There are children’s art and floral classes and a photography competition for amateur snappers on the theme of ‘Knowsley’s Outdoors’. Entries for the photographic competition need to be in by Friday, July 13.

As well as the giant floral marquee, which is always a blaze of colour and houses over 400 exhibits, there is a host of entertainment and arena attractions including:

  • Fresh Start , who are sponsoring the show, have a showcase marquee featuring local businesses, with help on hand for people thinking of starting their own business.
  • Plant Society Marquee, with produce on sale and lots of gardening advice.
  • Arena activities: Hawkeye Falconry, Dog Displays.
  • Creative Space Marquee back for a 2nd year, featuring local artists and advice on how to become involved.
  • Gardeners Question Time.
  • Green Fun on the clearing, including Sticky Exhibits Eco dome, meadow workshop and woodland crafts.
  • Further activities on the Clearing such as circus and music performances, including the All England Banjo Champion, John Dowling.
  • Youth Arts Friendship Field, with lots of activities for young people including live music and dance performances.
  • Arts and craft workshops.
  • A large Craft Marquee, with homemade crafts including cakes, jewellery and cards.
  • The Infozone Marquee including lots of local organisations giving advice and helpful tips and some freebies.
  • Children’s fairground rides

Cllr Eddie Connor, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture said: “The seeds of this event were sown in 1998 when community members from Whiston and Roby Horticultural Societies came up with the idea.

“The first show took place the following year and it has grown ever since, attracting over 11,000 visitors last year.

“Court Hey Park is a great place for the event to be staged as it is home of the National Wildflower Centre.”

If you would like more details of the event or would like to enter the photographic competition contact Sharon Tyrer, Senior Events Officer at Knowsley Council on 0151 443 2155.
