Four Kings and Country at Prescot Museum
The Industrial Revolution, American Independence, the Abolition
of Slavery and the Napoleonic Wars - just some of the
earth-shattering events that characterised the Georgian era and
helped to shape the modern world.
Prescot Museum’s latest exhibition, ‘Four Kings and
Country’ takes a fascinating look at domestic and military
life during this period, when from 1714 to 1830, kings George I,
II, III, and IV ruled what became Great Britain.
The exhibition focuses on the soldiers who fought in the many
battles that raged throughout Europe, the Americas and Africa
during this period, as well as everyday life and fashion at the
time.
Many military items including uniforms, swords and even the colours
of the Liverpool Militia, previously included in the ‘City
Soldiers’ exhibition from the Museum of Liverpool Life, are
on display. Miniature portraits of local officers are shown
alongside examples of the weapons they would have carried and the
uniforms they would have worn.
Remarkable original documents give an incredible insight into local
life, including the exercise books of Thomas Green, a Prescot
Grammar School pupil studying penmanship, arithmetic and
accounting, which date from between 1823 and 1826. The bill for a
local young woman’s education in London details her lavish
expenditure – 6 pairs of shoes in as many months!
Many articles of clothing illustrate just how colourful Georgian
fashion could be. One pair of kid leather slippers are bright
yellow with black polka dots and pink trim – fit for Lily
Allen but at least 210 years old!
There will be themed activity sessions for 4 to 11 year olds
throughout the school summer holidays at a cost of £1.50 per
child. Admission to the museum itself is free.
