Unlocking Knowsley's hidden gems

A local heritage project plans to shine a spotlight on Knowsley’s rich history, encouraging even more local people to take an interest in their area.

Unlocking Knowsley’s Hidden Gems is an innovative three-year project based around local heritage being launched by Knowsley Borough Museum and Heritage Service.

The project has been designed to encourage organisations with an interest in their local heritage, such as community groups, schools, residential homes and many more, to participate in creating a lasting memento of their heritage.

Hidden Gems will raise the profile of Knowsley’s heritage through a number of activities which will be of interest to local groups operating in each of the neighbourhoods across the borough.

Over the next three years a number of themes will be explored across the borough, including:

  •  Developing a treasure trail to highlight the area’s heritage
  • Developing Treasure Chests using aids including art work, photography and audio files that can be showcased throughout the borough
  •  Cross-generational reminiscence workshops
  • Web and printed resource development to capture the area’s heritage

We are looking to work with as many people as possible so whether you are already a member of a group or if you are interested individual we would still love to hear from you. If you think you or your group would like to be involved in the project at some stage over the next three years then call the museum on 0151 430 7787 then call the museum and ask to speak to Colette Thoms, the Community Heritage Outreach Co-ordinator.

Cllr Eddie Connor, Cabinet Member Leisure, Community and Culture said: “This is an exciting project that will enable local people to discover and celebrate their own heritage. It is about those things that make up the very fabric of our lives – the people, places, objects and celebrations that make us who we are and I urge people to get involved.”

Prescot Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am-1pm and 2-5pm, and on Sundays from 2-5pm, and Mondays by appointment (excluding bank holidays). For information about what the Museum and Heritage Service can offer, details of forthcoming exhibitions and our Saturday and Sunday Clubs or to book a school or group visit, please call us at the museum on 0151 430 7787 or e- mail prescot.museum@knowsley.gov.uk.
