Get on your bike and pedal your way into summer!

Bike riding at Plantation Primary

Knowsley Council is launching a new campaign aiming to encourage local schools and businesses to take a holiday…. from the car.

The Pedal into Summer campaign is being launched to coincide with National Bike Week and aims to raise the profile of cycling and encourage more people to try and leave the car at home.

The campaign will be launched on June 21, the longest day of summer, by children and teachers from Knowsley, who will be turning heads and wheels when they cycle around Halewood Park.

The three schools taking part in the ride are, Halewood CE, Plantation and Holy Family Primary Schools.

Steve Carson, the Knowsley Council’s Transportation Officer, said: “Pedal into Summer will give people of all ages and abilities the chance to get on their bikes. We’ve arranged a number of bike rides which will happen throughout the summer, at different places across Knowsley. Experienced cyclists will be on hand to help, and will also cycle with the group. It’s a great opportunity to get back in the saddle – I’d encourage anyone to come along give it a try because it’s safe, fun and healthy.”

Cllr Graham Morgan, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Neighbourhoods, said: “The Council has approved the use of money from a number of sources – including the Local Transport Plan and Sustrans – to improve existing and build new cycleways and footpaths throughout Knowsley. The Halewood Park area is a very good example, with a network of improvements linked to the Trans Pennine Trail, making it both safer and easier for local people to walk or cycle to their school or workplace. The Council will to continue to support schemes and initiatives that encourage safer more sustainable travel options.”

Knowsley Council has a programme of Pedal into Summer community cycle rides throughout the borough. For more information, contact Steve Carson on 0151 443 2230 or email steve.carson@knowsley.gov.uk. The National Bike Website is http://www.bikeweek.org.uk/.
