Selling alcohol to children costs off licence owner more than £4,500
The owner of Cheers off licence, Copplehouse Lane, Kirkby, Mr Alexander Grosart pleaded guilty to two counts of selling alcohol to people under 18.
Huyton Magistrates, yesterday, fined Mr Grosart a total of £1,500 for both offences and £3,078.83 costs.
Cheers off-licence sold the alcohol on two separate occasions, in January and August of 2006, as a result of test purchasing operations carried out by officers of Knowsley’s Environmental Health and Consumer Protection Service in conjunction with the Police.
Cllr Ken Keith, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Corporate
and Customer Services, said: “We are committed to protecting
the public and will not hesitate to take legal action whenever
necessary. I hope this sends a clear message to other premises
selling alcohol in the borough that selling it to children is not
acceptable. It’s clearly a public health issue and tough
action will be taken if retailers are found to be ignoring the
law.”
