Green challenge for Knowsley businesses

Knowsley is already leading the way as the UK's most energy efficient borough and is now setting a challenge to find the most environmentally successful small business.

The Business Environmental Challenge, established by Knowsley Council, is one of the region’s top environmental awards. It offers prizes totalling £3,000 to businesses that can show environmental achievement during the last year.

This is the fourth challenge organised by the council to recognise and encourage good environmental practice.

Waste minimisation, landscape improvements, energy conservation, recycling, using environmentally friendly materials and working with local communities to support environmental initiatives, are the types of projects the awards aims to recognise.

Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture, said: “Through our recent success of being the most energy efficient borough, we are now trying to get as many businesses as possible to be environmentally friendly. Being environmentally friendly can actually improve the profitability of businesses. This can include recycling waste products such as paper and card, to keep them from landfill, using double sided printers, to halve your paper bill and simply turning off lights and equipment when they are not in use. Businesses can also landscape around their premises to encourage wildlife, any little change will benefit the environment in some way.”

“So if your business is actively environmental then we want to hear from you. Fill in an application form today and enter this prestigious awards ceremony.”

The Business Environmental Challenge is open to all Knowsley based businesses employing up to 50 people in the borough. Last year Pure Filtration Services Limited of Kirkby was the overall winner.

For an application form call John Harrison on 0151 443 2419 or email john.harrison@knowsley.gov.uk. Closing date for applications is 31 December and judging will take place in January with the awards presentation in February or March.
