Knowsley Steps Up Racism Campaign
KNOWSLEY Council’s ongoing campaign to
stamp out racism in the borough takes
another step forward next week.
Knowsley Against Racism is a long-term strategy launched last year to help change public attitudes, encourage people to report racism and ensure every resident of the borough feels accepted and safe.
Tuesday (March 21) is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and to coincide with this Knowsley will step up its campaign by:
Launching a pledge card and window sticker campaign, encouraging residents to sign up and show they are against racism. Kicking off Knowsley Schools Against Racism – a drive to help children understand the campaign which will be launched with cultural meals and lessons. Delivering information to every household and business in the borough to raise awareness of the campaign. March 21 will also be marked by the signing of Knowsley’s first Racial Harassment Strategic plan, produced by Knowsley’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.
Partners from the private, public and voluntary sector organisations will sign up on the day, underlining the borough-wide commitment to beating racism and creating a safe community.
Huyton Library will also host writer and performer Chanje Kunda from Afrique Performs. Chanje will hold a writing workshop at 1pm and an African Storytelling Session at 2pm.
Celebrations at the library continue at 4.30pm when the Sefton Youth Percussion Group, which specialises in African and Ghanaian drumming, will perform.
Events on Tuesday will build further on the huge amount of work which has already been carried out in Knowsley.
This includes diversity days in schools, training teachers on anti- racism policy, training for neighbourhood wardens on how to deal with harassment issues and the forming of a Multi-Agency Racial Harassment Forum.
