Be Shed Secure
Homeowners are being urged to step up
security in their garden after a spate
of shed thefts across Knowsley.
As the spring approaches and people start stocking up their garden sheds, Knowsley Council is launching an awareness campaign to help residents avoid becoming the next victim of burglary from their sheds.
Last weekend, petty thieves struck across the borough, stealing garden equipment and DIY electrical tools from eight different properties. The crimes are a reminder to everyone in the borough that garden security is important and could make a real difference to the likelihood of being a victim of burglary.
As part of the new campaign being run by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP), a leaflet has been produced outlining simple and cost effective advice on how to make sure your garden does not provide encouragement to either an opportunist or committed thief. Advice includes positioning prickly plants around drainpipes and ground floor windows to act as a deterrent to house burglars, in addition to explaining simple ways to secure hanging baskets, potted plants and ornaments.
Margaret Flaherty, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Social Inclusion said: “It is unfortunate but timely that eight of our residents have fallen victim to opportunist thieves recently, just as we launch this campaign to encourage householders to give more thought to garden security.”
Colin Carter, Crime Reduction Officer for Merseyside Police added: “Making sure your gates and fences are in good condition is obviously the first step in securing your property. If someone can get into your garden easily and without being seen it gives them more time to find ways to steal from you. Then, if you have overgrown areas it also offers somewhere to hide.”
“One simple way of making your garden less accessible is to fit a trellis on top of the fence making it much more difficult for anyone to climb over. Low energy dawn to dusk lighting is another, and it is both environmentally friendly and inexpensive to run. Gravel paths and driveways also make it much harder for people to approach the property without been heard.”
Advice on shed security is also included in the leaflet, available from one stop shops, libraries and other council premises, to help make the storage of garden tools and furniture much more effective. Following the advice provided in the leaflet will help the continuing fight against crime.
“If I were to sum up the leaflet campaign in gardening talk”, Colin added, “I would say – sow the seeds of security now and you will reap the rewards later!”
