Knowsley Calls Time on Old Licenses
Knowsley Council is reminding
businesses including takeaways, pubs
and clubs that there is only a month
left to legally register under new
licensing laws.
The new Licensing Act comes into effect on November 24, 2005 and puts local authorities in charge of licensing functions previously the responsibility of the magistrate’s court. The law applies to premises used for the sale of alcohol, regulated entertainment or takeaways open until after 11pm.
Ian Rushton, Knowsley’s Principal Licensing Officer, said: “The needs of entertainment, drinks and food industry have been paramount to us and staff have been working hard to process applications and to help licensees apply for their new licences.
“We realise this is the biggest change to licensing for over 40 years and we are doing everything we can to help applicants with information and advice. However, some businesses still haven’t applied for their licence and if they don’t apply soon, they risk closure or prosecution.”
The changes being introduced are designed to prevent crime and disorder, public nuisance, improve public safety and protect children from harm.
They also give local communities the power to act if they feel that any pub, club or takeaway is breaching the law as each licence can be reviewed by the council.
Ian added ”Our aim is to make sure local residents who live near pubs and other premises that need a licence are not disturbed by those premises. However, if anyone is disturbed by noise from licensed premises, or is worried at the level of disorder at particular premises, then please let us know and we will take the matter further”.
Further information on the licensing changes can be found on Knowsley’s website www.knowsley.gov.uk or if you have any queries or want to make a complaint about a premises please contact the Licensing Service on 0151 443 3607 or email licensing@knowsley.gov.uk.
