Lotto Cash to Rebuild The Past

A World War Two Air Raid Shelter in the grounds of a Huyton school is set to be restored to its former glory thanks to a lottery grant of £10,000.

The shelter, in the grounds of Sylvester Primary on St John’s Road, was used as a safe haven for local people during the war but has lain disused for 60 years.

Now, thanks to the cash injection from The Big Lottery fund, the shelter is set to be renovated, making it an ideal environment for pupils to learn more about life in Britain during wartime.

Sue Price, parent governor at the school, said: “Most of our children have never seen an air raid shelter and it seemed a shame that there was one in the school grounds that couldn’t be used because of the condition it was in – particularly because the children all learn about World War Two as part of the national curriculum in Year 6.

“One of the governors suggested that the home school association, Friends of Sylvester Together, apply to the lottery to have the shelter renovated, so that it could be used as a learning tool. We were thrilled when we heard we had been successful in the application – but there’s a lot of work ahead!”

The group now have until December 31st to complete the project – excavating and replacing the shelter’s floor, adding electricity and collecting artefacts to exhibit inside. The shelter also needs to be fully accessible for pupils and other visitors with disabilities.

The school are interested to hear from anybody who could help them with the renovation, by offering help with the work or simply by sharing their memories of World War Two – particularly if they were pupils at Sylvester at the time.

If you can spare a few hours to help, please contact Sue on 07812925241.
