Breaking The Cycle of Drugs
Drug users who have turned to crime to
fund their habit are to be helped
change their lives for the better,
thanks to a new scheme launched in
Knowsley today.
The Drugs Intervention Programme aims to help drug users kick the habit whilst benefiting the community by reducing the amount of drug-related crime.
Targeted at adult addicts who steal or commit other acquisitive crimes to fund a Class A drug habit, the Intervention Programme offers a holistic approach to changing lives. The unit initially provides medical support to help service users get over the physical symptoms of addiction, before offering support and advice to enable them to get back into training or work, and advice with housing and benefits.
Run by Knowsley Council in partnership with Lighthouse Project, the Drugs Intervention Programme was officially launched today (Friday).
And, as well as benefiting the addicts it works with, the project has far- reaching implications for the rest of the community – helping to drive down acquisitive and violent crime, much of which is drug related, and helping reintegrate former addicts back into society.
Diane Bird, Chief Executive of Lighthouse Project, said: “The partnership will offer a range of interventions that aim to reduce offending and improve the health of substance users, with a positive impact for the whole community. Our goal ultimately is to enable people to live a drug free life.“
Cllr Ron Round, leader of Knowsley Council, said: “Taking part in the Drugs Intervention Programme is a real chance for addicts to change their lives for the better. It will also have a very positive impact for our communities, by stopping the ‘revolving door’ syndrome of constantly reoffending to fund a drugs habit.”
Proven to be a successful model by similar programmes in existence across the country, the Drugs Intervention Programme offers clients access to counselling, skills training, medical advice and complimentary therapies. Clients can be referred onto the programme from any part of the criminal justice system by the police, their parole officer, health workers, family or can choose to self-refer.
The Drugs Intervention Programme also operates a 24 hours help service, via the ACT phoneline, which can put you in touch with support agencies in your area by calling 0800 028 1300.
To contact Knowsley’s Intervention Programme direct, telephone 0151 480 5398 during office hours.
