Avoid Expensive Slip-ups

Businesses in Knowsley are being warned to watch their step to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries in the workplace.

As part of Watch Your Step, a major national Local Authority and Health and Safety Executive initiative during October, Knowsley Council is working with businesses in the borough to help them make their premises safer by offering advice and support on practical improvements.

Slips and trips are the biggest cause of major accidents at work, and around 90% of these involve broken bones – bad news for the individual concerned and for the business, which can then face many costs including temporary staff cover, lost production, potential enforcement action from the regulators and possible large compensation payments. Now Watch Your Step aims to reinforce the seriousness of slips and trips to businesses by highlighting the number of injuries and losses that they cause.

Nationally, the campaign will involve a co-ordinated publicity, education and inspection programme throughout the month, while in Knowsley, the council’s Public Health and Safety Team will be visiting business premises across the borough to raise awareness of the issues.

Cllr Brian O’Hare, Cabinet Member for Corporate and Customer Services, said: “There is much that can be done to prevent slips and trips in workplaces across Knowsley – and the council is committed to playing its part in this important Watch Your Step campaign.

“Slip and trip hazards can be easily identified and can usually be managed by simple steps. It can be all too easy to ignore the risks until it is too late and somebody has been seriously injured. Our Public Health and Safety Team are aiming to reduce the risks for both staff and customers by inspecting business premises in the borough and offering advice to those who run them.”

As well as making suggestions to help businesses make improvements, the team also have powers to take action against companies where serious health and safety problems are discovered, to ensure the protection of both employees and members of the public who may be at risk from slip and trip hazards at the premises.

Knowsley is also planning a Slips Awareness seminar for later in the year. Any businesses interested in registering their interest in this free event should contact Lisa Cullen or Hayley Robinson on 0151 443 4723.
