Heartless Owners Drown Newborn Puppies
Knowsley Council’s Dog Wardens service
is appealing to dog owners to take more
responsibility after a litter of
puppies were drowned in a pond in
Kirkby.
The litter of pups, aged only a few weeks old, were dumped in Mill Pond, North Kirkby, sometime last week. It is not known how many were killed but it is suspected that as many as six could have been drowned.
Now Knowsley’s Dog Wardens are urging owners in the area to get their dogs neutered to avoid the problem of unwanted puppies.
Pauline Stone, Dog Warden, said: “This is a terrible thing to have happened and is very upsetting for us, and for the members of the public who discovered the dead puppies in the pond. The pond is a popular area for families to go to, and is right next door to a playground.
“Not only is this a cruel, heatless act, it is also a totally unnecessary one. We would plead with owners to firstly get their dogs neutered and secondly, if they do find themselves with an unwanted litter, to take it to a local animal charity or contact the dog wardens, rather than needlessly killing them.
“We do a lot of work in Knowsley offering owners low cost or free neutering, worming and micro-chipping for their dogs. It does not take a lot of time, effort or money on the owner’s part to avoid such a tragic outcome as this one.”
Anyone who would like more information on neutering or any other aspect of canine care can contact the Knowsley Dog Wardens direct on 0151 443 2465.
