Knowsley Cracks Down on Con Men

Trading Standards
Have you been targeted by bogus callers? Or duped on your door step by con men and women? Then Knowsley Council’s Trading Standards Team would like to hear from you.

Residents, visitors and people who work in the borough are being given the messages to ‘check, chain and unlock’ during the Trading Standards roadshow throughout the borough.

They are being asked to fill in a questionnaire about their experiences of doorstep crime and cold calling. Everyone who does will be entered into a prize draw.

Alan Shone of Knowsley’s Trading Standards, said: “We are aiming to raise awareness of the dangers of doorstep crime and bogus cold callers through the roadshow. We are also hoping to get a greater insight into this problem through the questionnaires. Prizes for the draw have kindly been donated by local businesses as an incentive for people to fill in the questionnaire.”

During the Road show, going to Halewood August 23 and Cronton August 30, information on TASK – Trader Approved Scheme Knowsley was also given out. This scheme, established to help older and vulnerable residents of Knowsley avoid being victims of rouge traders and is run by Knowsley Pensioners Advocacy and Information Service with all traders on the T.A.S.K list having been vetted by Knowsley’s Trading Standards.

Knowsley residents who would like to use T.A.S.K can get more information by calling 0151 546 6680. Traders who wish to join the scheme should contact Alan Shone Consumer Advice Team Leader on 0151 443 2798.

Prizes for the draw were kindly donated by local businesses. 1st prize Focus DIY donated a garden bench. 2nd prize CD/Clock Radio from ASDA. 3rd prize £50 Ethel Austin vouchers. 4th prize £20 Sayers confectioners’ vouchers and 5th Prize £10 McDonald’s vouchers.

Cllr Brian O’Hare, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Corporate and Customer Services, said: “Safe neighbourhoods are high on our priorities and by raising awareness about doorstep criminals we want to help residents help themselves by not getting caught up and involved with these people whose only purpose to knocking on your door is to get money through unscrupulous means. “
