Road from China

Nanning Trip
Knowsley rolled out the red carpet for eight representatives from Nanning City in China yesterday (Tuesday).

The officials, including the Mayor of Nanning, enjoyed a pipe and drum fanfare as they arrived for a whistlestop tour of the borough as part of Knowsley’s friendship agreement with the city.

They were welcomed at the Huyton Suite by borough officials including the Mayor of Knowsley, Cllr Jim Keight and the leader of Knowsley Council, Cllr Ron Round.

They went on to visit Halewood Leisure Centre, Huyton City Learning Centre, Knowsley Safari Park and Cross Huller, a machine tool manufacturing firm based in Prescot.

The delegation then visited the business areas of the borough before sitting down for a farewell dinner and signing of the friendship agreement attended by Knowsley MP’s, elected members, Mr Jianzhang Gong, Consul General of People’s Republic of China based in Manchester and Dr Lee Kai Hung of the Lee Kai Hung Foundation.

The visit followed a similar trip to China by Knowsley officials in November 2004. The aim of the agreement is to develop economic and educational links that can benefit the two areas.

Cllr Round said: “It was great to strengthen our ties with the city of Nanning and reinforce a community friendship that will prove to be of great benefit to the people of both our communities. We can learn so much from each other by sharing ideas on issues such as inward investment, education and sport.”
