A new exhibition which celebrates the progress of a popular local artist is now open at Huyton Gallery.

Leslie Briggs, a former Visitor’s Choice winner at the annual Knowsley Open art exhibition, was offered a chance to exhibit a collection of his work at the Gallery after the curators of the Open noticed how much progress he had made over recent years.

A self-taught artist who has lived in Kirkby all his life, Leslie says he “never ever” expected to have his own exhibition. But Faces and Places is up and running at Huyton Gallery now, containing a collection of paintings of the people and places that mean something to him.

These include portraits of friends and family, capturing special family moments including his daughter’s engagement.

All in all the collection makes for a thoughtful and captivating exhibition which showcase Leslie’s increasing proficiency and style which has proved so attractive to visitors to the Gallery previously.

As well as winning the Visitor’s Choice prize at the Knowsley Open in 2012, Leslie was last year named Adult Visual Artist of the Year award at the Knowsley Sports and Cultural Awards.

Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “As a regular exhibitor in the Open and a talented local artist, it’s great that we are able to host this solo exhibition featuring a wide range of Leslie’s paintings.

“Not only is this a really fascinating look at some of the important people and places in Leslie’s life and how he has developed his style over the years, it’s also a great inspiration for other local artists.”

Huyton Gallery, within Huyton Library on Civic Way, Huyton, is open Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays from 10am - 5pm, Thursdays and Saturdays 10am –1pm and closed on Wednesdays.
