Quit smoking online or through your mobile phone

Innovative and award winning free digital services to help people quit smoking online or via their mobile phones are being launched in Knowsley on Tuesday, 13 May 2014.

The ‘Quit Buddy’ and ‘Quit Online’ programmes from the Knowsley Stop Smoking Service have been designed to make it easier for people to access stop smoking information, advice and support wherever they are throughout the day.

The new services will be launched in both Kirkby and Huyton town centres on Tuesday 13th May with health promoters and the service’s mascot ‘Wilma Willpower’ on hand with information about the services, answer any questions and help people to sign up on the day.

Quit Buddy provides people with free daily support and information via SMS texts to their mobile phones and Quit Online allows people access to stop smoking help at any time of the day from any location and has a range of handy tools such as cost calculator and regular emails.

Both services enable users to choose and collect free Nicotine Replacement Therapy products (for eligible clients) including patches, gum or lozenges from their chosen participating pharmacy.

Miriam Bell, Service Manager at City Health Care Partnership CIC’s Knowsley Stop Smoking Service said “The Quit Buddy and Quit Online programmes are fantastic new ways of helping people to quit smoking. We know people’s lives are incredibly busy and that they often don’t have the time to come to regular stop smoking sessions, so this will allow them to access information and support 24 hours a day from the comfort of their own home or wherever they choose.

“We are committed to finding new and unique ways of supporting people in Knowsley to stop smoking and we are very excited to be using technology in this way. These services have been used in other cities in the UK very successfully so we are delighted to be making them available to Knowsley residents.”.

Matthew Ashton, Director of Public Health in Knowsley, added “We are always looking to find new ways of helping and supporting our residents to improve their health and wellbeing. We all lead busy lives and through initiatives such as Quit Buddy, we are making it easier for our residents to receive support and stop smoking. People can access information and support at a time and place to suit them. It’s free to join so I would encourage residents to sign up today!”

The ‘Quit Buddy’ service recently won an award at the National General Practice Awards in London. Over 1400 people have quit smoking with Quit Buddy and Quit Online.

Leslie Archer, 42 signed up to the Quit Online Programme, “Doing it online is a better way for me, I’m a fork lift driver and I work night shifts so this way fits in with my work. There are great tools on there that show you how much money you are saving and show your progress –it really keeps me on track and I can access it anytime. I would recommend it to anyone. It makes stopping so much easier, it really is excellent”.

To register with Quit Buddy is easy simply text ‘Knowsley’ to 61825 (normal network rates apply) and to register for the Quit Online programme visit: www.readytostopsmoking.co.uk.
