Problem properties transformed

A disused block of flats in Kirkby, which had been a magnet for anti-social behaviour, has been transformed following an intervention by Knowsley Council’s Strategic Housing team.

The flats on Park Brow Drive in Southdene stood empty and boarded up and suffered smashed windows, damage to guttering and fencing, graffiti and vandalism.

As well as causing damage to the property, the anti-social behaviour was causing problems for residents in the surrounding area.

The Council worked closely with Merseyside Property Consultants, Berkley Shaw Estate Agents to engage with the landlord.

Berkley Shaw arranged a series of improvements to the flats, including new double-glazing units, heating, security and a range of cosmetic improvements both inside and out.

The flats are now fully occupied, Merseyside Property Consultants are now signed up to Knowsley Council’s Landlord Accreditation Scheme and the blight of anti-social behaviour has been removed from the immediate community.

Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills, Cllr Dave Lonergan, said: “This is an outstanding example of the work we carry out to bring empty properties in Knowsley back into use.

“This property was a real problem for the local community and I’m delighted that our Strategic Housing team has worked so effectively with our partners to tackle the blight on this community.

“The flats are now in an excellent condition and provide quality accommodation for local people.

“I would encourage all landlords in Knowsley to make sure they are part of our Landlord Accreditation Scheme. It’s completely free to join and helps you to promote your properties to prospective tenants and also provides a range of support and advice.”
