Knowsley residents ‘Get Ahead’ with new scheme

Published on: Monday, 13-October-2014

Residents in Knowsley will be able to ‘get ahead’ in all aspects of day-to-day life thanks to a new initiative launched today by Knowsley Council.

Get Ahead aims to help people in their daily lives, whether that’s helping the children with their homework, managing the household budget or landing their next job, by ensuring they have the maths, English or digital skills they need.

The ‘Get Ahead’ campaign raises awareness of the free, local courses available for residents to help them improve their skills, confidence and achieve qualifications in order to get ahead. It’s also about equipping people with the know-how so they don’t miss out on online benefits, such as discounts on fuel bills or accessing job application forms.

Whatever your skills, there is a course to suit you!

  • English skills for people who need help with their reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar.  Further courses are also available to progress to a nationally recognised qualification.
  • Maths skills for people who need help with multiplications, fractions, money management and measurement. Opportunities are also available to study towards a nationally recognised qualification.
  • Combined English and maths courses are also available, enabling you to study the two subjects in one location.
  • Workworld helps unemployed people improve their skills to help them back into work. All WorkWorld courses are accredited, so in addition to updating your skills, you will also achieve nationally recognised awards to add to your CV.  Further courses can also help residents to write a CV, search and apply for jobs, as well as developing their interview techniques.
  • Reading support courses, at a pace to suit you, are also available.
  • Computers for beginners is aimed at adults with little or no experience with computers who wish to develop their skills.  The course includes using the internet, setting up an email account, using Microsoft Office programmes and printing documents.
  • Digital Skills workshops are drop-in sessions to answer your questions about using the internet, email and searching for jobs.

In addition, residents will continue to be able to access Knowsley Works for wider support to help them get into work.
Cllr Dave Lonergan, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet member for Regeneration, Economy & Skills, said “We’re helping people to help themselves. ‘Get Ahead’ is about providing residents with information on the range of support, training and courses available to help them gain the skills or qualifications they need to improve day-to-day life.  Don’t delay – book your place today!”
