Knowsley Council announce new Leader

Published on: Friday, 22-May-2015

Councillor Andy Moorhead has been officially appointed as the new Leader of Knowsley Council.

At the Council’s Annual Meeting (held on Friday 22nd May) Cllr Moorhead - who was previously a Cabinet Member for Corporate & Customer Services - accepted the role, replacing with immediate effect Cllr Ron Round who has been Leader of Knowsley Council for 12 years.

Cllr Moorhead said: “I am both honoured and delighted to be taking up the position as Leader of Knowsley Council. As an elected member and resident of Knowsley I feel privileged to have been recommended for the post and very much look forward to leading the council in the coming years. Cllr Andy Moorhead

“Cllr Round has been an inspirational and hardworking Leader and will be a hard act to follow in many respects. I very much hope to emulate his long service and commitment to Knowsley in what is undoubtedly a challenging time for the council as it continues to face significant cuts to its budget.

“Having lived in Knowsley for more than 50 years I know how fantastic a place it is, and how strong and resilient our communities are. Although we may face challenges, we also have fantastic opportunities and I am committed to leading the council to realise those opportunities for all our residents in the coming years.”

Cllr Moorhead lives in Huyton with his wife Kay, also a Knowsley Councillor. Between them they have five children and 10 grandchildren.

For the past 16 years, Cllr Moorhead has worked in children’s social care and is passionate about working to support families. His hobbies outside of work and council business include a keen interest in the Napoleonic wars, reading military history, supporting Liverpool FC and gardening.

In addition to the changes in Leader, Cllr Edna Finneran has been elected as the new Mayor of Knowsley for 2015/16.
Changes to the Council’s Cabinet were also confirmed, which has been reduced from ten elected members to seven. The meeting also agreed wider changes to the council’s Governance structure. These changes will improve the effectiveness of the decision making process and give more elected members the opportunity to actively engage in that process.
