Know Your Numbers 2015

Published on: Monday, 07-September-2015

Do you know your numbers? If not, why not attend one of the events taking place across the borough and find out your blood pressure numbers.

Knowsley Public Health will be running a week long awareness campaign from 14 – 18 September, to encourage people to have free blood pressure and lung age checks on the iVan mobile health bus. The van will be visiting locations across the borough and nurses will be on hand to carry out the checks and offer practical advice.

Blood pressure is a measure of your blood as it is being pumped around the body. It can be low, normal or high. If the pressure is too high, it makes it more likely that you may suffer health problems such as stroke, a heart attack or kidney disease.

High blood pressure or hypertension is a common problem, affecting about 10 million people of all ages and lifestyles in the UK. The cause of high blood pressure is unknown but several factors can increase your risk of developing the condition. These include:

  • age – the risk of developing high blood pressure increases as you get older
  • a family history of high blood pressure (the condition seems to run in families)
  • being of African or Caribbean origin
  • a high amount of salt in your food
  • a lack of exercise
  • being overweight or obese
  • smoking
  • drinking large amounts of alcohol.

High blood pressure frequently has no symptoms so having it measured is the only way to find out. It’s a simple process, one which many of you will be familiar with, and is quick and painless.

The iVan mobile will be in the following venues on the dates below:

  • Monday 14 September: Huyton Village outside Boots
  • Tuesday 15 September: The Halewood Centre, Roseheath Drive, Halewood
  • Wednesday 16 September: Kirkby Town Centre
  • Thursday 17 September: Stockbridge Village, The Croft, Leachcroft
  • Friday 18 September: Tesco Prescot at the side of the front entrance in front of Mothercare

If you can’t attend an event in your area there are other things you can do:

  • If you live in Knowsley and are aged 40 -75, you can sign up for a free health check and have your blood pressure measured. Telephone your GP surgery to make an appointment or to find your nearest local community venue telephone (freephone) 0800 032 5821.
  • You can also make an appointment with your doctor / practice nurse or some local pharmacies will carry out a blood pressure check.
