Good Neighbours Awarded

Published on: Thursday, 24-September-2015

The stars of Knowsley’s communities were recognised for going out of their way to help others in this year’s Good Neighbours in Knowsley Awards.

Now in their sixth year, the 2015 awards paid tribute to the special people who have made a significant difference to the lives of their neighbours or local community, as nominated by the people they have helped. The 2015 Good Neighbours in Knowsley Award winners

Almost 100 nominations were received for 35 deserving Knowsley residents. The judges whittled down the nominees to four area winners, with one also being chosen as the overall ‘Borough Winner’.

The area winners were nominated for a wide range of reasons from counselling bereaved children and young people, to providing support for patients and their families at a cancer support centre, to being a reliable, trustworthy and genuine good neighbour.

Jimmy Gallagher was named the borough winner. He also won the Kirkby area award. Jimmy ran the Pingwood Art Group where he never failed to lift everyone’s spirits and send them home with a smile. Jimmy helped found the popular group over a decade ago. He ran regular events and arranged cultural outings for group members. If someone was ill and unable to get along he would visit them at home, helping ensure they still benefited from the social interaction the group provides. Jimmy passed away recently and his posthumous award was received by his family.

Pat Gallagher, Jimmy’s wife, said:

“Jimmy would have been thrilled and honoured to receive the Good Neighbours in Knowsley Award and we feel very proud to know he was held in such high esteem by his friends and colleagues.”

The Good Neighbours in Knowsley Award 2015 winners were announced at Knowsley’s full Council Meeting on Wednesday 16 September, where they were presented with their well-deserved glass award:

  • Jean Smith, Huyton
  • Harry Molyneux, Prescot, Whiston, Cronton and Knowsley Village
  • Jimmy ‘Hattie’ Gallagher, Kirkby
  • Ann Farrell, Halewood
  • Borough Winner, Jimmy ‘Hattie’ Gallagher

Cllr Chris O’Hare, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods:

“Congratulations to all this year’s winners and thank you for all the time and energy you’ve dedicated for the good of local people and communities.

"Jimmy Gallagher was certainly an exceptional man and a deserving winner of the borough’s Good Neighbours Award.  The awards are all about recognising people who go out of their way to help others and make a real difference to the lives of people in the local community.

“We have a strong community spirit here in Knowsley and it’s great to be able to recognise and say thank you to those special people in the borough.”

The Good Neighbours in Knowsley Awards were organised by the Knowsley Partnership.
