Go dry with friends

Published on: Tuesday, 19-January-2016

The key to a successful Dry January is enlisting your friends’ support, according to a woman who is doing the challenge to stay alcohol-free for the second year running.

Lyn Page, from Knowsley Youth Mutual, who describes herself as a social drinker, said:  “There’s strength in numbers. I got my girlfriends to do the challenge with me last year and we’re all doing it again this year. I only drink on a night out, so if I don’t go out I don’t miss the alcohol. Knowing we’re all staying in and I’m not missing out helps too.

“It is good to have a break from alcohol, I’m certainly not missing the hangovers! I like to think I’ll also drink less next month when I do have alcohol again.”

Cllr Eddie Connor, Cabinet Member for Public Health & Wellbeing, said:

“Well done to everyone like Lyn who has pledged to go dry this January, I hope it’s going well. If you haven’t signed up yet don’t worry, there’s still time to have a holiday from drink. Giving your body a break from alcohol, even for only part of the month, still has benefits and gives you chance to reflect on your drinking habits. We know from previous years that people who do Dry January will feel better, lose weight and save money.”

Evidence shows that six months after completing Dry January participants are drinking less frequently and consuming less when they do drink.

Lots of support is available throughout the challenge – not only from Dry January but also from the thousands of other participants taking part. Search for Dry January on Facebook or Twitter and join in. To find out more and sign up, visit www.dryjanuary.org.uk
