Free heritage skills training in Prescot a success

The first skills training event as part of the Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) has been successfully completed.

Prescot’s £3.2million THI project will see the repair and restoration of the town’s historic fabric.  The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded £1.85 million to the project, with additional funding provided by Knowsley Council, Knowsley Housing Trust and central government’s Empty Homes Fund.

The training course - Repair and Maintenance of Traditional Buildings – which took place at the Deane’s House on Church Street in Prescot was attended by a range of delegates including trainees, stone masons, architects, building surveyors, a conservation officer and a property developer.

The course covered the theory and practicalities of conserving traditional (pre-1919) buildings and was delivered by skilled and experienced craftspeople from the Building Crafts College.

Delegates focussed on how traditional structures work and should be repaired, the philosophy of whether to repair or restore and how stone decays. There was advice on dealing with dampness which can be a building’s worst enemy.

All 14 delegates passed the test at the end of the course and obtained an NVQ Level 3 in the Repair and Maintenance of Historic Buildings.

There were a small number of free places on the two-day course, which was co-funded by the HLF, National Heritage Training Group, English Heritage, Prescot THI and Liverpool Ropewalks THI.

Cllr Dave Lonergan, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills, commented “Historic buildings need people with the right knowledge and skills to look after them.  As well as repairing and restoring buildings, the Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative is importantly giving people in the local construction industry, and those entering it, the opportunity to gain these skills and experience.”
