Explore Knowsley’s past throughout November

Published on: Monday, 03-November-2014

The Knowsley Library Service has arranged a range of activities to help people explore some of the borough’s collections as part of National Explore Your Archive Week, from 10 to 16 November.

The events will take place at the Archive Resource for Knowsley (ARK) in Kirkby Library.

The week gets underway on Monday, 10 November with local author and storyteller, Roger Hill, giving practical help on shaping a story using materials from the past. The ‘crafting a story from personal history’ workshop runs from 2pm to 4.30pm.

On Thursday, 13 November the Family History Help Desk will be open from 9am to 12pm, where an experienced expert will be on-hand to offer support.

There will be behind the scenes tours at ARK on Friday, 14 November as part of its Open Day from 10am to 4pm. To book a place, please ring 443 4365. Film shows highlighting Knowsley’s past, an Archive Exhibition and local history quiz with prizes will also take place as part of the day.

Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture, said: “Preserving the borough’s historic archives and opening them up to as many people as possible is important as they provide such a fantastic resource for anyone wanting to explore their past.

“ARK is full of stories and pictures that shed light on what life was once like in Knowsley. I hope the range of activities we have planned during Explore Your Archive Week, and throughout the rest of November, will encourage lots of residents to visit the collections and discover something new and exciting about their family or local area.”

The explore your archive theme will continue throughout the month with activities in all Knowsley’s libraries.

Local author and broadcaster Ken Pye will host a series of talks on Saturdays at 11am:

1 November, Prescot Library, “From Roses to Rhinos”,
8 November, Halewood Library, “Of Giants and Duck Hunts”
15 November, Huyton Library “The Tale of ‘Titanic’”
22 November, Stockbridge Library, “Curiosities of Merseyside”
29 November, Kirkby Library “Trenches, Torpedoes, Bombs & Bunkers”
