Council seizes thousands of illegal cigarettes

Knowsley Council’s Trading Standards team have seized thousands of illegal cigarettes and tobacco with a street value estimated to be in the region of £10,000.

The items were seized from an address in Southdene, Kirkby during an operation this week in partnership with Merseyside Police.

Around 30,000 cigarettes were seized together with 15 kg of hand rolling tobacco.  The illicit tobacco and cigarettes are a mixture of counterfeit and illicit whites which are products specifically made for the black market and smuggled into the UK.  Further enquiries are being made by officers.

Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate and Customer Services, Cllr Andy Moorhead, said: “This was an extremely successful operation carried out by our Trading Standards officers.

“We had received intelligence from the community about illegal goods at the address and, as always, we worked with our partners to investigate.

“Some people might think that buying illegal tobacco is doing nobody any harm. That is not the case – it hurts legitimate businesses and has been shown to fund organised crime.

“I urge anyone with information about the sale of illegal tobacco to contact our Trading Standards team on 0151 443 4737 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
