Members of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority met for the first time today to formally establish the Combined Authority – on the 40th anniversary of the creation of ‘Merseyside’.

Members of the Authority are Councillor Rob Polhill (Halton), Cllr Ron Round (Knowsley), Mayor Joe Anderson (Liverpool), Cllr Barrie Grunewald (St Helens), Cllr Peter Dowd (Sefton), Cllr Phil Davies (Wirral) and Robert Hough (Chairman, Local Enterprise Partnership).

The Chair and Vice Chair were also elected, with Cllr Phil Davies appointed as Chair and Cllr Ron Round as Vice Chair.

The Constitution, Operating Agreement, establishment of the Merseytravel Committee and appointment of officers were all agreed.   A notice of motion was also endorsed for the Combined Authority to be referred to as the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority for public purposes.

The Combined Authority members received an update on High Speed Rail and the Liverpool City Region Growth Plan.  This Growth Plan will support businesses to grow and create jobs through focusing on the City Region’s strengths and ensuring that it can capitalise on opportunities such as the £340m Liverpool 2 development.

The Combined Authority will work closely with the Local Enterprise Partnership Board, whose Chair is a member of the Authority, to develop links with local businesses.

Cllr Phil Davies said “These are really exciting times for the Liverpool City Region.  Economic growth and jobs are top of our wish list right now and my colleagues in the Liverpool City Region share my determination to tackle this challenge.  Through the formation of the Combined Authority, the City Region is now in a stronger position when engaging with Government.  This will mean that we will be able to do more to support businesses to grow and create jobs.”

“We must not forget that the Liverpool City Region is competing against others on a national and global scale and everyone of us, without exception, has been behind the Liverpool City Region brand all along.  Importantly, every Local Authority in the Liverpool City Region will have both an equal and valuable contribution to make to this very important agenda”.

The next meeting of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority will be held at 11am on Friday, 13 June 2014 at 1 Mann Island, Liverpool.
