Children's Centres on YouTube

Children’s Centres in Knowsley are embracing social media to help raise awareness of the support they offer to local families.

The centres in Knowsley have been using Facebook and Twitter to communicate with parents for some time, but now Huyton’s Children’s Centres have taken it one step further and launched their own You Tube Channel.

Staff, volunteers and parents involved with Knowsley’s Children’s centres have been busy creating short videos to post to the channel, so that people can see for themselves what their centres offer before they even walk through the doors.

The idea is to give people an idea of the things the centres offer, the chance to get to know some of the staff and also learn important skills such as first aid, cooking on a budget or how to wean your baby.

The YouTube Channel was officially launched at a Popcorn and Preview Event at the River Alt Resource Centre in Huyton. Families gathered to watch the first videos posted on the site with many saying they thought the idea was a really useful one.

Cllr Gary See, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Knowsley Council, said: “This is a great idea and allows the children’s centres to use new technology to reach even more families in the local area.

“We know that some people may not know what their local children’s centre has to offer, or could even feel nervous of walking through the door for the first time. The videos will really help them understand what to expect and see that others like them are using the centres and getting a real benefit from doing so.”

Last year, Ofsted praised Knowsley’s Children’s Centres, rating Huyton, Halewood and Whiston’s centres ‘Good’. Kirkby children’s centres were the first in the country to be graded ‘Outstanding’.
