Ordnance survey and Tithe maps

The second series of ordnance survey maps are available for the whole Borough. This covers the period from approximately 1839-1940. Some copies of the Tithe Maps and Apportionment’s are also held for the Borough. This may assist in pinpointing landowners, occupiers, houses, land use and field names.

International Genealogical Index (IGI) - Microfiche

The 1988 version of the IGI (sometimes called the Mormon Index)is held on microfiche. This index records baptisms and marriages collated by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. It is arranged by surname and given name within the countries of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man.

International Genealogical Index (IGI) - CD-ROM

In this format the IGI is held for the world, though not every church has been covered. It is possible to access data by name or country. It covers the period up to 1993. Other facilities are available such as the IGI Ancestral File, the U.S. Social Security Death Index and the Addendum to the complete IGI (1998).

Local newspapers

The Prescot Reporter is available on microfilm from 1859 (with gaps) until 1985. The West Derby Reporter is available on microfilm for the years 1955-1963 and the Kirkby Reporter on microfilm from 1964-1979. They can supply information on births, marriages and deaths and major local incidents.

Parish registers

The Local Studies Library at Huyton has a good collection of local registers, most of which are in microfilm or transcript. A set (with gaps) of the Lancashire Parish Register Society volumes is also held.

Register of electors

Old electoral rolls are held at Huyton library.

Wills

Although a few copies of local wills are stocked, copies of the volumes of the Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire are available at the appropriate Record Office from 1457- 1858.

Periodicals and books

A comprehensive bookstock covering the history of the North West and all aspects of life within Knowsley Borough is available for reference and study. Many of these are included in the computerised catalogue and staff will assist in locating titles should you require assistance.

Historical and up to date maps of Knowsley and various areas in the North West can be consulted on request.

Family Tree Magazine and other periodicals of interest are on display in the library. Staff will be happy to provide a list of magazines and journals in stock.
