Directories
Just as we have the yellow pages today, the Victorians had trade directories. If you know your ancestor’s trade, for example a carpenter or a shoemaker, you can locate him in the trade section or you can find him alphabetically in the residential section. The directories are useful for finding an address by which to locate the family in the Census Returns. At Huyton Library we hold the Gore’s/Kelly’s directories for Liverpool from 1766-1970. However these are not complete and there are gaps. They are in printed volumes or on microfilm.
