Homelessness - advice for young people

Can we help you?

  • Are you under 25yrs of age?
  • Are you having problems at home?
  • Do you need help trying to live together?
  • Do you need help trying to stay at home?
  • Do you need help and support to enable you to move from home?

We may be able to help

Knowsley Council is concerned at the numbers of homeless young people in the area and as a result have introduced a mediation service. We have included some information regarding what the mediation service can offer.

What is a mediator and what can they offer?

Mediation is a process of discussion and negotiation, enabling parties to find their own solutions in the best interests of everyone involved. Mediation tries to help you find answers. Mediation is free and confidential. Mediation is voluntary – so you can stop when ever you want. Mediation is not about who is right or who is wrong. Mediators do not take sides.

Mediators offer a confidential and independent service for young people and their carers, where they are in difficulties that might lead to homelessness. Help to stay at home, if appropriate. Help to plan and support a move from home to lessen the difficulties associated with living alone.

How does it work?

Mediators will see all parties separately at first, so that everyone knows what to expect from mediation. Then, if both parties agree, an appointment will be arranged so that everyone can come together to discuss the problem. The responsibility for any decision remains at all times with you. We help you find your own solutions and make your own decisions.

Will it work for me?

It may be that just talking about the problem helps you see a solution and you can then do something to sort it out. If mediation does not work then we can help you consider the other possible options available to you. Taking part in mediation does not hold up your housing application.

Contacting the Mediation Service

On behalf of the Council the mediation service is operated by Merseyside Accommodation Project (MAP). MAP can be contacted via the Homeless Prevention Team at the KHT offices situated in the Council’s One Stop Shops (during office hours 9:00am to 5:00pm) or via the telephone on 0800 694 0280.
