Homelessness - accommodation

Area of choice

Following your homelessness assessment by the Homeless Prevention Team, if it is decided that you are homeless and that the Council has a duty to re-house you, the offer of accommodation made to you could be for any area in Knowsley, unless you have special reasons to be housed in a particular area. You will be asked about which areas of Knowsley you wish to live in and why. Please give as much information as possible about your links to the area(s) of your choice.

You will receive a maximum of two suitable offers of accommodation in the areas of your choice. The areas are:

  • Kirkby
  • Halewood
  • Prescot / Whiston
  • Huyton / Page Moss
  • Stockbridge Village

Size of accommodation

The size of the accommodation will be according to the rules of the allocation policy of the landlord making the offer.

A suitable offer of accommodation

The property must be suitable for all members of your household. Officers of Knowsley Housing Trust (KHT) on behalf of the Council will take into account the particular circumstances of all members of the household such as:

  • Medical and or physical needs
  • Social needs
  • Risk of violence or harassment

The property will also:

  • Be at an affordable rent
  • Be in a reasonable state of repair
  • Have adequate heating
  • Meet current health and safety standards
  • Be ready to move into within a reasonable period of time

Priority between people applying

When a property is offered every household on the list that meets the size criteria for that property will be considered. The offer will be made to the person/people who have been registered and accepted as homeless for the longest period of time on condition the property is suitable for them.

Your new landlord

In most cases you will be offered a Housing Association property (such as KHT, Villages HA or Riverside HA). In some cases you may be offered a property in the Private Sector.

Tenancy

The tenancy offered by a landlord will normally be a starter tenancy. If you accept a starter tenancy you will be ‘on probation’ for a fixed period, normally 12 months. Normally this will be converted to an assured tenancy at the end of the year.

On the other hand, if your family or visitors cause nuisance or disturbance to others you may find that the landlord ends your tenancy at the end of the probationary period. The landlord should be able to provide you with more details if you ask for them.
