Welcome to Health and Social Care

Logotype for Health and Social Care

Young carers

The Young Carers Project works with children and young people up to the age of 18 years, who look after a sick or disabled parent or relative.

A child who is a carer may have a range of responsibilities, which they are physically and emotionally unable to undertake. These responsibilities could adversely affect the child's health, physical and emotional well being as well as depriving them of social and educational opportunities.

The project recognises that young carers have individual needs and rights, which should be taken into account separately from the person they are caring for.

The project works with around 120 young carers at any one time across the borough. There is no lower age limit for children to be defined as carers as very young children can and do, take on significant caring responsibilities.

Visit the Knowsley young carers website for more detailed information (see related links below).
